Wine Tasting Guide

If you take time to taste the wine, really taste it, you will discover a bursting of flavors and layers of complexity with each wine product.

Here’s a simple guideline on wine tasting. Who knows this could be the beginning of your being a wine connoisseur.

See the color.

Fill about 1/3 of the glass with wine, hold it by the stem before a white background.

Then swirl or tilt the wine glass at a 45 degree to observe the depth of the wine’s color and the way the light catches it. You will discover that wine colors are hardly plain white or red, it come sin a variety of shades like yellow, gold, amber, purple, ruby, and pink.

Reds usually become lighter in color as they age.

Smell the aroma.

Swirl your wine as this releases molecules in the wine allowing you to smell the aroma. After a few swirls, put your nose just inside the rim of the glass and take a sharp sniff. Don’t try to taste the wine yet, concentrate only on what you smell. It may be difficult to describe the aromas at the beginning, but after trying many wines you will notice similarities and differences.

Sip the wine.

Take only a small sip of the wine to sample. Slosh it around your mouth to feel its body. Examine the body and texture of the wine. Is it light or rich?  Smooth or harsh? Then swallow or spit the wine after 30 seconds, ponder on the taste that remains in your mouth.

Take a moment to value its overall flavor and balance. Is the taste appropriate for that type of wine? If the wine is very dry, is it supposed to be?

Try these techniques several times and soon you will learn of the difference between high quality and cheaply produced wines.
